**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the road ahead. I was ready to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, leaping into such a major life transition felt overwhelming. Now, after reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I can contemplate what I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might have similar concerns. I recall my first day in student housing, a couple of days before classes started. The thought of introducing myself made me so anxious that I spent the whole day sequestered in my room.
Now, looking at the present, I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships ever. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. The most helpful aspect was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking small talks with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what’s the essential lesson? Take that courageous step early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to meet individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adjusting to the academic demands and challenges was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level content was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and assuming they’re further ahead.
What helped me maneuver through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are, too. The best course of action is to seek help—whether from your peers or your instructors. Learning to request assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of seeking help, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department staff are. They sincerely want students to thrive and show immense understanding towards the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal interactions, getting to know your lecturers and support personnel is one of the smartest strategies you can adopt.
My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and assistance at your disposal. You can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With a comprehensive range of support options available from staff and fellow students, there’s always someone available to assist. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance exam and deadline stress with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a journey of growth, and I’m eager to discover what the future holds as I proceed with my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
