**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always leaned towards being introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, hurdles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this likely weighs on your mind as well. On my first day in student accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. My classmates have transformed into my second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who shared my feelings.

What have I discovered? Taking that first step to reach out to others is invariably rewarding. If you’re feeling hesitant or uneasy initially, don’t fret—throughout the year, there are numerous icebreaking events and chances to mingle. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a rich tapestry of individuals at Imperial, you will surely find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and the intricate nature of the subject matter was another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level study was palpable, and the transition between the first and second term was even more pronounced. It’s not uncommon to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing peers who appear to be excelling.

What made a difference for me was understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are you’re not alone. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to seek help may well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
The faculty in the Materials department have been amazing. They genuinely care about student success and are considerate regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and provided ongoing assistance.

I didn’t fully engage with the available support services until later in the year, and I wish I had utilized them sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me forge bonds with faculty, which proved invaluable. There are many chances to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage you to seize these opportunities. My most significant revelation? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never accumulate too much help!

### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students alike, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while embracing moments of joy and fun, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

Embarking on university life is a leap into the unexpected, but it presents a chance for growth, connection, and exploration. If you’re about to set off on your own adventure, know that challenges will arise, but so will remarkable experiences and support to guide you through.
