**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who used to be introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was not exactly something I relished. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gathered, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might be a major worry for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I have developed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever known—friends who resemble a second family.

How did I achieve this? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were in similar situations. The most significant lesson I learned is to take that first step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals at university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and increased complexity of university coursework was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when observing fellow students and assuming they are excelling beyond you.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the acknowledgment that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are, too. The essential move is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Mastering the art of asking for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered support when we sought it.

Although I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support available until near the end of the year, I only wish I had availed myself of it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initial steps I took, and it proved to be extremely fulfilling. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which I highly recommend to all students. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, familiarizing yourself with the faculty can be immensely beneficial. My key takeaway here is to leverage the support systems in place—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are endless support avenues available, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone and that balancing stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment is entirely achievable.

Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve grown since that shy, timid newcomer who sheltered in their room on the first day. This year has been a voyage of self-discovery, and I am eager to see what lies ahead.
