### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was quite a departure from my previous shy and introverted disposition. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a good deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may have similar concerns. On my first day in student lodging, just days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too nervous to venture out and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. My companions here at Imperial have truly become a second family to me. All it took was stepping outside of my comfort zone and striking up casual chats with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

What have I taken away from this? I’ve learned that taking that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you will undoubtedly find others who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can at times undermine your confidence. You might glance around and feel as though everyone else is handling it better than you are, but it’s essential to remember that we’re all facing similar struggles.

If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others share the same confusion. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance. This has been perhaps the most vital lesson I’ve gained during my first year: never hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and faculty members.

#### The Significance of Support

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for students to thrive and are fully cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. They are considerate of our experiences and foster open communication throughout the entire year to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support options available until the concluding part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Assuming the role of a year wellbeing representative was one of the bold choices I made at the start of the year. This position helped me form valuable connections with faculty members.

There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Insights Gained

As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, ready to aid you in overcoming challenges. This year has illustrated to me that I’m never alone and that enjoying university life, even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines, is indeed possible.

Looking back, I can see the extent of my growth—not just in academics, but also in personal development. I’ve learned to welcome challenges, seek help when necessary, and find joy in the journey.
