**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and memorable moments, I can genuinely acknowledge how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I faced at the onset of university was establishing friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a daunting challenge, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to others.

Looking back now, I can confidently say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become a second family, and it all began with brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what did I discover? Taking that initial step is essential. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will unfold throughout the year. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who share your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others around you seemingly excelling.

What aided me was realizing that everyone is undergoing a similar experience. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, chances are others are as well. The crucial part is reaching out for assistance—be it from your fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most valuable skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Significance of Support and Connection

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials Science department have been phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the start of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable.

There are ample opportunities to become acquainted with the staff, and I highly recommend seizing these chances. Whether it’s through formal positions, office hours, or informal chats, cultivating relationships with the teaching team can greatly impact your experience. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to the realization that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to help you tackle any challenges.

This year has enlightened me to the fact that I’m never truly alone. It has shown me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment. Most importantly, it has been a year of personal development, demonstrating that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to remarkable experiences and lasting connections.

If you’re preparing to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the chance, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
