**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity about what awaited me. I was ready to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize an experience filled with development, challenges, and countless unforgettable instances. So, what has this year imparted to me, and how do I perceive my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student accommodation, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Flash forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become my second family, and it merely required stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What have I learned? Taking that initial leap is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands and intricacies of the course content. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving.
What aided me was reminding myself that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, others likely do too. The solution lies in asking for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson I gleaned during my initial year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your peers or the teaching team—they are there to assist you.
### Fostering Connections with Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for their students to flourish and understand the obstacles we face. They encourage open communication year-round and are always ready to address our questions.
While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early on, I stepped up to become a year well-being representative. This experience allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My suggestion? Fully utilize the support and resources available to you—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both before commencing university and during the academic year—were often unwarranted. With the abundance of support available from faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone to confide in.
This year has shown me that I’m never genuinely alone, even in tough times. It has demonstrated how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and excitement. Above all, it has been a year of personal development, and I look forward to what the future brings.
