**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and quiet self was used to. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a voyage composed of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons have I taken away, and what is my current standing?

### Making Connections: The Initial Hurdle

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest concerns too. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who truly feel like a second family here at Imperial.

What did I glean from this experience? I realized that taking that first step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connection with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being yourself is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals in your course and at the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Confronting the Workload

Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging.

What supported me during this period was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re stumped on something, there’s a good chance others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might just be the most significant lesson I took away from my first year—reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty.

### The Value of Assistance

Speaking of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been outstanding. The staff genuinely desire for you to succeed, and they comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They maintain consistent communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we have. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which has proven to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to bond with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your benefit. My key takeaway regarding this facet of university life is to fully leverage the support available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

All in all, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are countless support systems established, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those feelings. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance having fun with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
