**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt quite overwhelming. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I can genuinely recognize the progress I’ve made. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the outset of university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student, this could very well be one of your primary worries too. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present day, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds, which now resonate as a second family, originated from casual conversations with others who were equally anxious. The most important lesson I acquired? Take that risk early on. If you’re not feeling quite ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a rich tapestry of diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

The transition from A-levels to university-level academics proved to be another major challenge. The intensity and amount of coursework were indeed a considerable escalation, and the shift from first to second term felt all the more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted and doubt your capabilities when observing peers studying, but it’s crucial to keep in mind that everyone is navigating the same challenges.

When you encounter something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The secret is to ask for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. This may be one of the most critical skills to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how incredible the Materials Science department is. The professors and support personnel genuinely aim for student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They encourage open dialogue and are always available to lend a hand.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later, I regret not having reached out sooner. Early in the year, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to connect with staff members. This experience ended up being immensely gratifying. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best investments you can make. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—it’s designed to ensure your success.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the past year, I have realized that the unease I initially felt about beginning university—and even throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I came to understand that I was never truly alone. I also discovered how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and excitement.

To summarize, my first year at Imperial has been an expedition of self-exploration, growth, and connection. For anyone poised to embark on their own university journey, my message is straightforward: take that leap, embrace the obstacles, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You may just find yourself pleasantly surprised by the extent of your personal growth along the way.
