**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to kickstart my journey as a first-year pupil in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into such a major life transition felt daunting. Yet now, reflecting on an academic year rich in growth, obstacles, and ample happiness, I realize how life-changing this experience has been. But what have I truly absorbed, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of building friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might find yourself in a similar situation. On my inaugural day in student housing—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Jump ahead to now, and I am pleased to report that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my field of study and throughout the broader university community. It simply required stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who felt just as apprehensive.

What have I grasped? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year pays off. Don’t be disheartened if you’re not immediately ready—there will be a plethora of icebreaker opportunities and ways to engage with fellow students. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re destined to find others who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable hurdle was acclimating to the level of the coursework and the volume of work. The transition from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing peers who seem to be flourishing.

What helped me to push through this was realizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The secret lies in seeking assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty members. Learning to obtain help may be the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Cultivating Connections with Faculty

While we’re on the topic of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, addressing our worries and offering their guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support provided until late in the year, and I wish I had engaged sooner. At the beginning of the year, I did take a step forward by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to form bonds with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can immensely enrich your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much aid!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often misplaced. With the extensive range of support available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to manage stress from examinations and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and self-exploration.

To anyone gearing up to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those brave leaps, and don’t be afraid to seek help. You’d be surprised at how much you can develop in just a single year.
