### Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was preparing to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has traditionally been introverted, plunging into such a fresh and demanding setting felt intimidating. Reflecting on the past academic year, I can recognize the extent of my growth. It has been a period of personal exploration, overcoming obstacles, and sharing many enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is often the most daunting part of beginning university—and I was no exception. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships of my life. At Imperial, especially within my program, I have discovered a second family. It all began with simple interactions—engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.
What did I glean from this journey? Firstly, taking the initial step to reach out to others is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Secondly, the most beneficial thing you can be is yourself. With such a diverse student body at Imperial, you are bound to encounter many who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Confronting Academic Challenges
Another obstacle I needed to navigate was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your abilities when you witness others studying diligently and thriving.
What supported me during these episodes of self-doubt was the understanding that we are all in the same situation. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most vital skill you can cultivate during your initial year.
#### Establishing Connections with Faculty
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely want to see students thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to address our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available to me until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, a role that enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most important lesson? Utilize the resources and support networks available to you—you can never get too much assistance!
#### Lessons Gained
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and relaxation.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, resilience, and connection. To anyone gearing up to embark on their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember—you’re never solitary in this experience.
