**Reflections on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unknown felt particularly intimidating. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time characterized by growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was forming friendships. For many new students, this aspect can be one of the most daunting when starting university life. I recall spending my first day in student housing, hiding away in my room, too intimidated to go out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most rewarding friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have become like a second family, spanning my course and the wider university community.
What aided me? Taking gradual steps. Engaging in conversations with individuals sharing my experience made a substantial difference. My most important lesson? Don’t shy away from taking that bold step at the outset of the year. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities in the company of high-achieving classmates.
What helped me navigate through those periods of uncertainty was recognizing that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I didn’t understand something, it was likely others were struggling too. The essential takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or teaching staff, reaching out for support is one of the most valuable skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support offered by the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication to address any issues we encountered.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the wellbeing support available until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Assuming the role of a year wellbeing representative was a daunting choice for me, but it ultimately became a fulfilling experience. It helped me forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. My recommendation? Make full use of the support systems available and don’t hesitate to reach out. You can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. A wealth of resources and support systems exists, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely feasible to balance academic demands with moments of enjoyment and fun.
As I progress onward, I am thankful for the growth, friendships, and experiences that have defined my first year. To anyone gearing up for their own university adventure: embrace challenges, seek support, and always stay true to yourself.
