**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding the road ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was establishing friendships. Beginning university can be daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probable that this is a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Jump ahead to the present, and I can assertively say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, starting with brief exchanges with individuals who were equally apprehensive.
So, what insights can I share? Taking that initial leap of trust at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared right off the bat, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and gatherings tailored to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a rich and varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and worry you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—this may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your initial year. Reach out to your classmates and feel free to approach your instructors for guidance.
### Assistance from the Materials Division
Referring to instructors, the Materials Science faculty at Imperial is outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This responsibility allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.
My most important takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehensions I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout my experience here—were frequently unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you maneuver through challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s entirely feasible to harmonize the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved in just one year. From the timid and uncertain freshman I was in October 2022, I’ve transformed into someone who’s more self-assured, resilient, and prepared to embrace whatever lies ahead.
