**Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the upcoming journey. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year pupil in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, the thought of immersing myself in university life felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and, most crucially, enjoyment. So, what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, it’s likely that this is one of the aspects you are most apprehensive about as well. On my very first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I am elated to say that I have formed some of the best friendships of my life. I have cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with others who were feeling the same way.

What did I discover? I discovered that taking a bold step at the year’s outset is always a rewarding endeavor. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, be reassured—there will be ample social events and ice-breakers to help you engage with your peers. Most importantly, I learned that remaining true to yourself is crucial. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your vibe.

### Navigating the Academic Load

Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the increased complexity of the material. There was certainly a discernible jump from A-levels and an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an intense academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you witness others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone shares in this experience. If something doesn’t make sense to you, odds are there are others who are just as puzzled. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek help. This may well be the most pivotal lesson I learned during my first year—do not shy away from reaching out for assistance from your peers and faculty.

### The Vital Role of Faculty Support

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly desire for you to flourish and are attuned to the challenges students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and extending their support. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral resources until the year drew to a close, but I wish I had capitalized on them sooner.

At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with the staff, which was invaluable. There are numerous ways to establish relationships with the faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support and assistance offered—you can never have too much!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I am never genuinely isolated. Most importantly, I discovered how to balance enjoying my time while navigating the unavoidable stresses of examinations and deadlines.
