**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I got ready to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a newcomer in my first year, I was entering a realm of uncertainty, which was quite unfamiliar for my previously timid and introverted self. Reflecting on this past year, I realize it has been a period of transformation—characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A particularly daunting part of beginning university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you are a potential student perusing this, it might be one of your primary worries as well. On my very first day settling into my accommodation, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and this journey initiated with taking modest steps—such as striking up casual conversations with others who were just as inexperienced in this situation as I was. My key takeaway is that making that first move is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, have no fears—there will be numerous icebreakers and activities tailored to facilitate connections. Most importantly, remain true to who you are. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are certain to come across individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacy of the material proved to be another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first semester to the second was even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-performing peers.

What assisted me in maneuvering this was the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a particular topic difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others do too. The secret lies in reaching out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the academic staff. Cultivating the ability to seek out help may well be the most important skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Significance of Support and Community

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Over the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

Even though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the early leaps I took, which turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which became immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Thanks to the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, those feelings were manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy my time while juggling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

This year has been a journey filled with growth, and I’m thankful for the challenges and opportunities it has presented. To anyone preparing to embark on a similar journey: take the plunge, embrace the support surrounding you, and have faith that you will find your niche.
