**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous delightful experiences. But what insights did I gain, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your concerns as well. On my first day in my student dorm, just days before classes officially commenced, I remained in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever known.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who have enriched this experience beyond measure. How did this come about? It all began with casual conversation and bonding with others who were in similar situations.
The most significant lesson I learned? Take that courageous step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker functions and chances to meet others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me in overcoming this? Realizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are others do as well. The essential thing is to seek help—whether from fellow students or the teaching faculty. Developing the ability to ask for assistance is possibly the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The professors and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. They maintain transparent communication throughout the year and are consistently ready to address our concerns.
While I didn’t fully utilize the available support until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Fully leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during my time at university—were unfounded. With the extensive array of support available from both faculty and peers, those worries can be alleviated.
This year has revealed to me that I’m never truly alone. It has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun. Most importantly, it’s been a year of growth, demonstrating that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to extraordinary experiences.
If you are about to start your university adventure, know that it’s completely normal to feel anxious. But trust me, you’ll navigate your way, just as I did.
