**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, venturing into the unknown seemed like a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Connecting with Others
One of the most frightening hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can feel daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met have truly become like a second family to me. It all initiated with casual conversation and bonding with those who shared my situation.
What did I learn? Taking that first step of courage at the year’s outset is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and functions designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied group of students in your course and the university, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another major obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being in a rigorous academic setup can sometimes undermine your self-assurance—you may glance around and doubt your capabilities.
What kept me grounded was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, it’s probable that others share your experience. The vital lesson I learned in my first year is the importance of seeking help. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance from your classmates or the teaching staff—this may be the most crucial insight I gained during my first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is truly exceptional. The lecturers and support staff are sincerely invested in your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They exhibit empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, which I regret not doing earlier. At the start of the year, I ventured to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and leveraging these connections can significantly enhance your university experience.
My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the support offered. Whether it’s academic assistance or pastoral guidance, you can never have an excess of support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often misplaced. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never alone. I’ve discovered how to manage the tension from exams and deadlines while savoring my time at university.
Ultimately, my inaugural year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a life-changing experience. It’s been a journey of development, education, and forming enduring relationships. If you are on the verge of starting your own university journey, welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember—you’re not by yourself.
