**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and apprehension about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introspective, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and endless moments of joy. So, what insights has this transformative year provided me, and what is my current standpoint?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many newcomers, this is often a significant worry when starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student accommodation, merely days before the semester officially commenced, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too uneasy to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Now, as I look back, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions, uplift me, and enhance my daily experience. It merely required me to step outside my comfort zone and initiate small chats with others who were equally anxious.

What did I gain from this experience? Taking that first step is essential, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t be concerned—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Getting acclimated to the academic demands and the intricacies of the material was another notable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the move from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your skills when you observe others studying and succeeding.

What assisted me most during these times was the understanding that we are all in a similar position. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that many others were grappling with it as well. The best decision I made was to seek assistance—whether from my peers or the teaching staff. This is arguably the most significant lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication, ensuring our issues were acknowledged and addressed.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had acted sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I highly recommend doing so—it can significantly impact your experience.

My key takeaway here is to utilize the resources and support systems offered to you. Whether it involves academic advice, mental health assistance, or just someone to talk to, there’s no limit to how much help you can receive.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both before embarking on university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has enlightened me on how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments filled with joy and fun.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, resilience, and discovery. If you’re preparing for a similar journey, know that it’s alright to feel anxious—but also understand that you possess the ability to confront those fears and flourish in this new chapter of your life.
