**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become my second family, both within my program and across the university.

So, what aided me in this process? Taking that crucial first step. Even if you initially feel unprepared or uneasy, there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. I also discovered the vital importance of authenticity. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened level of academic challenges. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first semester to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, particularly when you perceive others studying and assume they are managing far better than you.

What helped me endure those tough moments was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, chances are others are in the same situation. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This might be the most significant takeaway from my first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Regarding faculty support, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to lend a hand.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of a well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it became a wonderful choice. It enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through official roles or casual encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is among the best actions you can take for yourself. My biggest insight? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I felt prior to beginning university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the generous support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and fun.

In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. It’s been a journey of self-exploration, growth, and learning to embrace challenges. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, remember that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Take that plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary. You’ll be surprised by how much you can accomplish.
