**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the challenges that awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been an introverted person, stepping out of my comfort zone was a significant challenge. Now, as I reflect on this academic year that has passed, I see a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Confronting the Challenge of Friendships

One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably something on your mind as well. On my initial day in student housing, I isolated myself in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve known. My classmates have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university.

What enabled me to conquer this challenge? It all initiated with light conversation and discovering common interests with others who were equally apprehensive. My greatest lesson? Take that bold step early on. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who align with your interests.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable obstacle was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience feelings of being overwhelmed or doubt one’s capabilities when observing peers who are studying and thriving.

What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The essential step is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or educators. Learning to request support is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the ongoing year, they kept communication lines open with us, addressing our worries and providing advice.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Initially, I made a bold move by becoming a wellbeing representative for the year, which allowed me to develop connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Fully utilize the support networks available to you—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the academic year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own. I’ve also figured out how to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been a path of growth, education, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what the future will bring.
