**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in apprehension, anxiety, and ambiguity about what the future held. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been timid and introverted, plunging into such a life-changing experience felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year replete with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I cannot help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely you share similar concerns. On my first day settling into university housing—just a few days prior to the start of term—I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become like a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what did I take away from this? Firstly, it’s invaluable to take that bold step early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others will present themselves. Secondly, always remain authentic to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe your peers studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are there are others who are feeling the same way. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—this may be the most essential skill to cultivate in your initial year. Whether it’s connecting with fellow students or asking for guidance from faculty, never hesitate to inquire.

### Assistance from Faculty and Support Services

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the Materials department staff are. They genuinely care about students’ success and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and demonstrated understanding towards our difficulties.

Although I didn’t entirely leverage the pastoral support options available until the end of the year, I wish I had utilized them earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members that proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to beginning university and during the course of the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress associated with exams and deadlines while also relishing moments of joy and excitement.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of growth, self-exploration, and community. To anyone preparing to initiate their university journey: embrace the obstacles, take those courageous steps, and remember—you’ve got this!
