**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the path that lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into unfamiliar territory was far from my normal comfort zone. Now, reflecting on a year filled with development, challenges, and happiness, I can confidently affirm it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of forming friendships. For many incoming students, this tends to be one of the primary anxieties associated with starting university, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day in student residence, just days before the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say that I’ve established some of the most rewarding friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered—both within my course and throughout the university—have become my extended family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small exchanges with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was.
What have I learned? Making that crucial first move at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not ready straight away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by exceptionally talented peers.
What facilitated my journey through this was realizing that everyone is facing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others were encountering difficulties too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Learning to request support is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Developing Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Early in the academic year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest lesson? Utilize the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This past year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year itself—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with joyful and fun moments, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.
As I look back, I feel thankful for the challenges, the friendships, and the chances for personal growth. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, keep in mind: take that leap, seek help, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
