**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey enriched with growth, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Navigating the Challenge of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was forming friendships. For many aspiring students, this can be a primary source of stress, and I was certainly no outlier. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I found myself spending the entire day cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever encountered—friends who have become like a second family.
What shifted? It all began with minor steps, like engaging in light conversation with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. I realized that taking the initiative early on is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the best course of action. With such a richly diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What aided me during this time was understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, others likely are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether it be from your classmates or the faculty. This is arguably the most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t hesitate to pursue help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are nothing short of remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and were consistently available to address our worries.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. Stepping up as a year well-being representative was one of the proactive measures I undertook at the year’s onset. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to liaise with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My chief takeaway here is to leverage the resources and support systems on offer—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was oftentimes unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my initial year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a year of personal development, new friendships, and invaluable insights—lessons that I will carry with me as I further my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
