**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, diving into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on a year of academics filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I have grown and what I have accomplished.
### Confronting the Challenge of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of making new friends. If you are a future student who is reading this, it’s likely that this is a concern for you too. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the official term start, I isolated myself in my room all day, too anxious to emerge and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I have encountered here have turned into my chosen family, both within the university and in my program. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small exchanges with others experiencing the same feelings.
What did I discover? I learned that taking risks at the onset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t immediately feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found the value in being authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals at university, you are sure to find others who share your passions and beliefs.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major obstacle was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-level studies to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when observing others studying and wondering if you measure up.
What aided me during those challenging times was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, likely, there are others grappling with the same issues. The essential thing is to seek assistance—this might be the most crucial skill to develop in your first year. Whether you reach out to classmates or ask for help from faculty, seeking assistance can be transformative.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The educators and tutors truly care about your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with our struggles and keep lines of communication open throughout the year to tackle any challenges we may face.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff on a deeper level. This proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various methods to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway is to utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I realized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are abundant support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in navigating these challenges.
This year has taught me that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to enjoy oneself even during the pressures of exams and deadlines. It’s been a year of personal growth, learning, and forging connections, and I eagerly anticipate what the future will bring.
