**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, entering such a novel and demanding atmosphere felt daunting. However, now that I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. For many newcomers, this is often one of the largest concerns when beginning university. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast-forward to the present, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to take a chance and initiate small conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, these minor exchanges evolved into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with a simple desire to connect.
What insights have I drawn from this experience? First, it’s essential to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year, even when it feels uncomfortable. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to mingle with others. Secondly, the best approach is to remain true to yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter others who share your passions and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging.
What assisted me in managing this challenge was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same issue. The crucial thing to do is to seek assistance. This has perhaps been the most vital lesson I gleaned throughout my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to fellow students or teaching staff for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely want students to prosper and are well aware of the hurdles we confront. They consistently engage with us and provide guidance throughout the academic year.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had done so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I did take one significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience.
The primary takeaway from this? Fully utilize the support available to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral support, or simply getting to know your lecturers, you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both prior to embarking on my university experience and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the broad array of support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone.
This year has further taught me how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. It has been a year of growth, resilience, and learning to embrace uncertainty.
To anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You’re not solitary, and your experience will be as gratifying as you make it.
