**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I geared up to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not a situation my shy and introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve grown and learned.

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was the quest to make friends. For numerous incoming students, this is often one of the primary concerns at the onset of university. On my first day in student accommodations, just days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I confidently state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—companions who resonate with my experiences and enrich my university life. It simply required me to exit my comfort zone and strike up small chats with others who were equally nervous.

So, what insight have I gained? Taking that first plunge at the year’s commencement is vital. If you’re not immediately comfortable, don’t fret—there’s an abundance of icebreaker events and avenues to connect with others. Above all, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Trials

Adjusting to the academic demands and complexities of university-level coursework was yet another challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others who seem to be thriving.

What aided me during this time was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your colleagues or your instructors. Learning to ask for help is among the most essential skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication and offered support whenever necessary.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant choices I made at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a brilliant decision. It enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable.

There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant realization? Make the most of the support that is available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has enlightened me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during the onset of university was often unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure, and I’ve grown tremendously as an individual.

Looking back, I’m thankful for the trials and opportunities that have defined my first year. To anyone about to kick off their university adventure: embrace the nerves, take that leap, and believe that you will find your path.
