**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, apprehensive, and uncertain about the road ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering such a fresh and demanding atmosphere seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in student accommodation, a few days ahead of the term officially starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve created some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from casual chats with individuals who were equally anxious as I was.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step of courage is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a diverse mix of people at university, you will surely encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more profound. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me in these instances was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The pivotal point is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate throughout your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support from the staff in the Materials department. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was a bold move that turned out rewarding. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Make full use of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much help.
### Insights Gained
As I contemplate my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was unwarranted. There is a plethora of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you through the challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands like exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment is entirely feasible.
This past year has been a transformative experience, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds as I pursue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
