### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging straight into this new phase was not something my introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I can contemplate the knowledge I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of making friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you may feel similarly. On my inaugural day at student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I devoted the entire day to staying in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, I can assuredly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here—friends who resemble a second family.

What aided me in reaching this milestone? It began with taking small steps, such as engaging in simple conversations with individuals who were just as uncertain as I was. I discovered that taking that initial leap, although intimidating, is rewarding. And if you’re not quite ready immediately, no need to fret—there are plenty of ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Above all, I realized that being authentic is crucial. In such a diverse student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Adjustment

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re on track.

What helped me in overcoming this challenge was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re grappling to grasp something, there are likely others feeling the same way. My best advice is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the academic staff. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

#### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Staff

Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department are remarkable. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we confront. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing direction.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was a significant leap for me, but it ultimately became one of my best decisions. It opened doors for building relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant insight? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the apprehensions I had prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—were often baseless. With the extensive range of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment, and I’ve experienced substantial personal growth.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, understand that feeling anxious is perfectly okay. Take those necessary leaps of faith, rely on the support surrounding you, and remember to savor the experience.
