**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always identified as shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I recognize how much I have grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day settling into university housing, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone else. Fast forward to now, I can affirm with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I could have hoped for.

The pivotal moment arose when I made the choice to step out of my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with individuals who, like me, were also facing similar uncertainties. Gradually, I cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with a bold step forward. My suggestion? Embrace that leap early on. If you feel unprepared, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the educational expectations of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level academics was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel swamped or to question your abilities, particularly when observing others who appear to have everything under control.

What aided me the most was realizing that we’re all experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are your peers are too. The crucial element is seeking assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. Developing the ability to reach out for help is one of the most essential skills you can foster in your first year.

### Aid from the Materials Department

Referring to support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I could have leveraged that resource earlier. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to foster relationships with staff members. This experience was invaluable, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual engagements, building rapport with staff can have a significant impact. Keep in mind, the support is accessible—don’t hesitate to utilize it.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge. I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve also learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while still savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone gearing up for their first year, recognize that feeling anxious is perfectly normal, but have faith that you will develop through the experience. Take those bold steps, seek assistance, and embrace the adventure that lies ahead.
