**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, throwing myself into this new adventure was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, various challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles for me was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this ranks as one of the primary apprehensions about initiating university life, and I was certainly among them. On my first day residing in student accommodations, just days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve connected with here have evolved into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. All it took was to step beyond my comfort zone and spark small conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What have I learned? Taking that courageous first step at the outset of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, fret not—there will be a multitude of icebreaker gatherings and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter folks who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adjusting to the expectations and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted and question your competencies while observing others studying and seemingly flourishing.
What aided me in this journey was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are facing the same difficulties. The essential step is to seek assistance. This perhaps stands out as the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers and faculty for help.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. They genuinely aspire for students to triumph and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering support.
I must confess, I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral resources available until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the proactive steps I took early on was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Capitalize on the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I realize that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even during the journey—was often unwarranted. There are myriad support structures in place, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through challenges. I’ve recognized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun while managing the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
This inaugural year has been a journey of development, resilience, and connection. If you’re on the verge of commencing your own university adventure, know that feeling nervous is entirely normal. Embrace the possibilities, take those chances, and remember—you can handle this.
