**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt like a lot to handle. Yet now, upon reflection, I recognize a year that has been rich in personal development, hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can feel intimidating, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, a few days before classes officially started, I remained in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. My classmates have turned into a second family for me, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what did I discover? Make that first move early. If you’re not quite prepared, there’s no need to fret—there will be abundant icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re guaranteed to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of university-level materials was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt particularly intense. At times, I questioned my capability, especially when I observed others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me during those moments of uncertainty was realizing that I wasn’t by myself. Everyone else was in a similar position, and if I struggled with a concept, it was likely that my peers did too. The critical takeaway here? Don’t think twice about seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for assistance is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely wish for our success and show understanding towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I undertook early on, enabling me to establish meaningful relationships with staff members. Getting familiar with your instructors and tutors is priceless, and there are ample opportunities to do so. My advice? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was largely unfounded. With the ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring joyful moments.
To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and always remember that help is readily available.
