**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, dread, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was set to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a major life transition felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path rich with personal development, hurdles, and immense joy. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was the quest to make friends. If you are a potential student, this could be among your top worries as well. On my first day in student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The pivotal moment came when I realized that everyone else was similarly apprehensive. A little small talk with those in comparable circumstances was all it took to begin establishing connections. Now, I feel I have a second family here at Imperial, both in my program and throughout the wider university community.

What did I take away from this? It’s vital to take that first brave step. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. Above all, just be yourself. With such a broad spectrum of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your personality.

### Navigating Academic Difficulties
Adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of university-level material was yet another challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and assuming they’ve got everything sorted out.

What assisted me during these challenging times was understanding that I was not alone. If I had trouble grasping a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The essential skill to cultivate during your first year is learning to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
One of the most remarkable elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering advice.

While I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative early on helped me connect with faculty, which was invaluable. There are various avenues to build relationships with staff, and doing so can profoundly impact your university experience. My major takeaway? Utilize the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Lessons Gained
Looking back over this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, from faculty to fellow students, and you are never genuinely alone in your challenges. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and self-exploration.

In hindsight, I am proud of my progress. From overcoming my initial trepidations to welcoming the trials of university life, this year has been a transformative journey. If you are about to begin your own adventure, keep in mind: take the plunge, seek help, and savor the experience.
