**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was immersed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and modest, stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
A major challenge I encountered was the process of making friends. For many new students, this often ranks as one of the foremost concerns about commencing university. I vividly recall my first day in student housing, wherein I found myself sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my field of study and throughout the university—have evolved into a second family for me.
What aided me in overcoming this obstacle? An eagerness to take that initial leap of faith. Even if you don’t feel prepared at the outset, there is no need to fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others in similar circumstances await you. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another notable hurdle was adjusting to the academic demands and the increase in complexity compared to A-levels. The shift from the first term to the second was particularly stark. It’s simple to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by exceptionally talented peers. Nevertheless, one vital reminder that kept me centered was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.
The most important lesson I gained during this phase was the importance of seeking help. Whether from classmates or teaching staff, seeking assistance is vital. There’s no disgrace in acknowledging your difficulties—university is an educational journey, and collaboration plays a significant role in that process.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department has been outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our questions and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. One of the finest decisions I made was to assume the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through structured roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best steps you can take for yourself. My chief takeaway? Make use of the support structures available—you can never have an excess of help.
### Insights Gained
As I look back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive support afforded by faculty and fellow students, I was never isolated. This year has enlightened me on how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and fun.
So, to anyone gearing up to embark on their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that assistance is always within reach when required.
