**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into the depths of university life felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I cannot help but think about the lessons I’ve absorbed and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing the same apprehensions. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have become my second family at Imperial, all starting from simple conversations with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What was the biggest lesson for me? Take that leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd at university, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adjusting to the academic demands and challenges was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates. However, one helpful realization was that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, odds are others are too.

The important takeaway is to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, reaching out for help can be incredibly impactful. Learning to ask for guidance is arguably one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want students to excel and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, responding to our concerns and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the initiatives I participated in early on was becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience, and I highly recommend looking for opportunities to bond with your lecturers and tutors. Utilize the resources and support networks available to you—you can never seek too much help!

### Key Insights from My First Year

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the plethora of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, filled with personal growth and indelible memories. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take bold steps, and remember that support is always accessible.
