**Thoughts on My First Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I readied myself to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new stage of life felt overwhelming. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it has been a transformative experience—one filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I faced initially was the task of making friends. Starting university can feel like a lot to handle, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours tucked away in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
The secret? Taking that first step. Initiating conversations with others who are in the same situation can lead to meaningful connections. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s fine—universities usually arrange icebreaker events and activities to assist you in meeting new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another hurdle I faced was getting used to the academic workload and the greater complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.
What made navigating this easier for me was understanding that I was not alone. Everyone experiences similar challenges, and if you’re puzzled by something, chances are, so are others. The most valuable insight I gained was the importance of seeking help—whether from peers or faculty. Asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness; it’s a crucial skill that will greatly benefit you during your academic path.
### Help from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been extraordinary. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our worries and offering assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to engage with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to forge connections with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest lesson? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Key Takeaways
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With a wide array of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fulfillment.
Starting university is a leap into the unknown, but it’s also a chance for growth, connection, and exploration. If you’re about to embark on this journey, welcome the challenges and trust that you’ll find your place.
