**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Launching into a new phase of life was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I see a year filled with obstacles and significant personal growth along with unforgettable moments. So, what lessons has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is a significant concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the day sequestered in my room, too daunted by the idea of stepping outside and introducing myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I have ever known. These bonds have become a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university. The secret? Taking that initial leap of faith and initiating small talks with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What I gleaned from this situation is that stepping outside of your comfort zone at the year’s start is always beneficial. If you’re not ready immediately, no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Facing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework was yet another important challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the follow-up felt even more drastic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What aided me in this journey was realizing that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I was unsure about something, it was likely that others were, too. The most significant lesson I absorbed was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Asking for help is not a weakness, but rather an essential skill that can make a substantial difference during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
One of the highlights of my initial year has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They truly want students to thrive and show understanding of our struggles. They keep communication lines open throughout the year, responding to student inquiries and offering direction.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the early risks I took, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage stressors like exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and satisfaction.
So, to anyone gearing up for their own university adventure: face the challenges head-on, take those leaps of faith, and remember that help is always close by. University is a period for growth, learning, and cultivating lasting friendships—and it’s an experience I would not exchange for anything.
