**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into such a fresh and demanding atmosphere was far outside my usual comfort level. As I now reflect on an academic year rich in development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences, I feel compelled to consider what this past year has taught me and my current position.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. For many new students, this is a primary source of concern when starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, merely a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to take a chance and engage in brief conversations with others who were equally new and apprehensive. In time, those small exchanges evolved into significant relationships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with that initial step.
What has this taught me? Firstly, taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is worthwhile, even if it feels daunting. If you don’t feel ready at once, that’s perfectly fine—there will be ample ice-breakers and opportunities to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another key challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Staying confident wasn’t always straightforward, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I wasn’t keeping pace.
What guided me during those tough times was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I found something confusing, it was likely that others were too. The crux was seeking help—be it from fellow students or staff. This, in my view, is the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year. Don’t shy away from asking for assistance; it exists for a reason.
### The Significance of Encouraging Staff
One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science faculty. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our issues and providing counsel.
While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. At the start, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster connections with staff members. This experience proved immensely beneficial, and I would urge others to discover ways to engage with their lecturers and tutors. The lesson here? Make full use of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both before entering university and during my time here—was frequently unfounded. Numerous resources and supportive individuals, from staff to peers, are at your disposal. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I progress, I feel increasingly confident, more connected, and better equipped to face future challenges. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, seek help, and remember to savor the journey.
