**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what the future would bring. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, the prospect of stepping into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year that was marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can assert that it was a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary worries when starting college, and my experience was no exception. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to the present, and I’m proud to say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. What made the difference for me? Taking that first courageous step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others.
The most significant takeaway for me is to be true to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re bound to encounter others who resonate with your interests and beliefs. A bit of casual conversation with someone in a similar situation can facilitate the formation of meaningful bonds.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of course material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others who seem to have everything under control.
What helped me navigate those moments of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding a particular concept difficult, it’s likely that others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to reach out for support is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your inaugural year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and exhibited understanding toward our difficulties.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support options until the latter part of the year, I wish I had accessed them earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was a brave move for me, but it ultimately became one of my best choices. It enabled me to forge valuable relationships with faculty members. There are ample opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Fully utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even during the academic year—often had no basis in reality. With the extensive range of support from both staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely alone.
Most importantly, I learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still finding time for enjoyment and laughter. This year has been a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and learning to face challenges with confidence.
If you’re on the brink of starting your own university journey, know that it’s perfectly fine to feel apprehensive. Take those bold steps, ask for guidance when needed, and don’t forget to savor the experience.
