**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set off on a path that brought me feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted, plunging into such a fresh and demanding setting was quite intimidating. Looking back now on an academic year marked by personal development, challenges, and numerous delightful experiences, I can assert that it was a pivotal journey. So, what insights did I gain, and what position do I find myself in today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forming friendships. If you are a future student perusing this, you may resonate with these feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the term officially commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and engage with others. Fast forward to now, and I am thrilled to report that I have forged some of the finest friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t materialize instantly, but they began with small efforts—like initiating casual conversations with individuals who were equally apprehensive. Over time, I discovered a second family at Imperial, both within my program and across the wider university.
What has this taught me? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that bold step at the beginning of the year. Even if you might not feel entirely prepared, there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Secondly, stay authentic. With Imperial’s richly diverse community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Struggles
Adjusting to the academic demands and complexities was another notable obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What aided me in maneuvering through this was the awareness that we’re all in similar situations. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same issue. The crucial thing is to ask for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching personnel. This became one of the most vital lessons of my initial year: never hesitate to ask for support.
### The Value of Staff Support
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials Science and Engineering department are exceptional. They truly want students to excel and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and actively solicited our feedback on enhancing our experience.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of the most beneficial choices I made was becoming a year wellness representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became incredibly important. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, developing relationships with the staff is among the best things you can do for your wellbeing.
What’s my key takeaway from this? Make the most of the resources and support structures that are there for you. There’s never too much help available!
### Reflecting on the Year
As I reflect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both leading up to starting university and throughout my time here—was mostly unfounded. With the plethora of support options offered by staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own.
I’ve discovered how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and downtime. Most importantly, I’ve learned to welcome challenges and step beyond my comfort zone.
If you’re preparing to enter university, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But rest assured, there is a lively community and ample support ready to help you flourish.
