**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Embracing such a fresh and uncharted territory felt overwhelming for someone like me, who has always been introverted and reserved. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and abundant happiness, I can appreciate how transformative this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student going through this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just days before the term officially commenced—I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking back, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and across the wider university community. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who shared similar experiences.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. If the moment doesn’t feel right or you’re not yet comfortable, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With a diverse range of people and interests, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your personality.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was the transition to the course’s challenging workload and complexities. The leap from A-levels to university expectations was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being part of such a high-pressure academic arena can sometimes undermine your confidence—you might look around and feel as though everyone else has it all figured out.
However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most valuable lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether turning to peers or reaching out for help from faculty, asking for assistance is an essential skill that will benefit you greatly.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials Science team is. They sincerely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and demonstrated genuine compassion for our challenges.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year was nearly over, and I wish I had begun sooner. At the year’s onset, I decided to take a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This role provided me with opportunities to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly rewarding. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key insight? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year in its entirety, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I experienced before and during university were unwarranted. With the ample support from both staff and fellow students, there’s always someone available to offer guidance. This year has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to strike a balance between enjoying my time and managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
Ultimately, stepping outside my comfort zone and welcoming the trials of university life has been one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve encountered in my life.
