**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, as I contemplate the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is among the principal apprehensions associated with commencing university, and I was no different. On my very first day in student housing, mere days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with others who shared my feelings. Through these initial exchanges, I discovered a second family here at Imperial. The essential takeaway? Take that leap of faith in the early stages. If you’re not quite ready yet, fret not—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others will arise. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the demands and intensity of academics presented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others seemingly flourishing. Nevertheless, one crucial realization that aided me was understanding that everyone is grappling with similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty comprehending a topic, it’s likely that others are as well.

The most significant lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching faculty, reaching out for support can make a world of difference.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the Materials Science faculty at Imperial are outstanding. They genuinely care about students achieving their goals and are compassionate toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing advice.

While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be priceless. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. Additionally, I learned how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth, friendships, and experiences that have shaped my inaugural year at Imperial. To anyone about to embark on their own university path: embrace the obstacles, take those courageous steps, and remember—you can do it!
