**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I embarked on an adventure that was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty. I was set to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had traditionally been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Reflecting on this past academic year, I realize it has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting facets of starting university was the challenge of establishing new friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here at Imperial and in my program have become like a second family. All it took was stepping out of my safe space and striking up small dialogues with others in similar situations.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking risks at the start of the year is always rewarding. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with fellow students. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to meet others who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your abilities, especially when witnessing others studying diligently as if they have everything under control.

What aided me in overcoming this feeling was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others share that confusion. The key lesson I internalized in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for help can make a substantial difference.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of instructors, the Materials department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The teaching staff and support personnel genuinely desire for students to excel and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. They keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year to address any issues we may have.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources that were available until the end of the year, and I wish I had done it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the courageous steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be a fantastic choice. It afforded me the ability to cultivate robust relationships with staff, which has been invaluable.

There are numerous avenues to connect with staff members, and I thoroughly recommend utilizing them. Whether it’s through well-being initiatives, office hours, or simply asking questions, forging those connections can significantly enhance your university life. My primary insight here is straightforward: don’t hesitate to tap into the support offered to you. Assistance is always beneficial!

### Insights from My First Year

Reflecting back, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was often unfounded. With an extensive array of support systems available—both from educational staff and classmates—it’s easier to navigate difficulties than I initially believed.

I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable pressure of exams and deadlines.

### Closing Reflections

Embarking on university is a significant milestone, and feeling apprehensive is completely natural. However, by taking small steps, being genuine, and seeking assistance when necessary, you’ll establish your footing and flourish. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
