**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced an array of nerves, fears, and uncertainties as I was about to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my introverted nature was used to. However, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating hurdles I faced at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire time holed up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an extended family.
What enabled me to overcome this anxiety? It was simply initiating small chats with others who were feeling just as hesitant as I was. I discovered that taking the plunge early, even when it feels awkward, is consistently worthwhile. And if you’re not quite ready at the onset, fear not—there are ample icebreaker events and avenues to meet new people. Most importantly, I found that being true to yourself is crucial. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another prominent challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies, particularly when witnessing others study and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What helped me navigate these episodes of self-doubt was the acknowledgment that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was facing similar obstacles, and if I struggled to grasp a concept, it’s likely others did too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Requesting help is not a weakness; it’s a vital skill that can be transformative in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department has been outstanding. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and show genuine understanding for the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered continual support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a risk I took early on, and it became one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly recommend capitalizing on these opportunities. My primary lesson? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the vast array of support options available from faculty and peers, assistance is always at hand when needed. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
As I look forward, I’m eager to continue evolving, acquiring knowledge, and maximizing my experience at Imperial. To anyone initiating their own university path: take the plunge, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
