**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what would come next. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been rather introverted, plunging into such an unfamiliar and demanding setting felt intimidating. However, looking back now, I recognize a year that was packed with obstacles but also filled with personal development, self-exploration, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Initial Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might feel similarly. On my very first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were feeling equally uncertain.

What have I learned from this experience? First, it’s definitely worthwhile to take that plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or self-assured, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Second, just be yourself. With such a diverse population at university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge involved acclimatizing to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies when observing others studying hard and succeeding.

What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The fundamental takeaway here is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Mastering the art of asking for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Support and Connection
One of the most remarkable aspects of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They truly have a vested interest in students’ success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and provided various support avenues.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral care resources until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took early on, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to form connections with staff members, which were invaluable. There are countless avenues to engage with staff, and these connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I have learned that the anxiety I felt prior to and throughout my university experience was often unwarranted. There are numerous resources and support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in addressing any challenges.

Above all, I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own. This understanding has allowed me to savor my university experience, even in the face of the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I ponder my first year, I feel thankful for the personal growth, the friendships, and the valuable lessons I’ve obtained. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the difficulties, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
