**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has been shy and introverted, immersing myself in this new environment felt like an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can confidently state it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern, and I was no exception. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I am proud to announce that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known. These relationships have evolved into my second family at Imperial, starting with simple steps—like engaging in light conversation with fellow students who shared my nervousness.

What lesson did I take from this? Taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another crucial challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to be thriving.

What assisted me in managing this? First, I reminded myself that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or the academic staff.

### The Value of Support and Connection

Speaking of staff, I must highlight how incredible the Materials department is. The lecturers and support staff genuinely aspire for students to excel and consistently show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication all year round, addressing concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, and I regret not utilizing it earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of the bold actions I pursued early on, proving to be incredibly fulfilling. It allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which has been invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual conversations, getting to know your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial actions you can undertake.

The main takeaway? Make the most of the support structures available to you. Whether seeking academic help or pastoral guidance, there’s no limit to how much support you can receive.

### Final Thoughts

This year has demonstrated that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone. More importantly, I’ve learned to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Looking back, I recognize how far I’ve advanced since those initial anxious days in October. University has been a journey of personal development, and I’m eager to discover what the next chapter will bring.
