**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, unease, and questions about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a newcomer in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this experience was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with advancement, struggles, and enjoyable moments, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
Among the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might resonate with similar feelings of dread. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just days prior to the term officially commencing—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone else. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.
These bonds have morphed into my second family, both relating to my academic program and throughout the university at large. What was my strategy? Taking that initial leap and striking up casual conversations with individuals sharing my situation. If you’re feeling apprehensive, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. The main takeaway? Be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Facing the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic responsibilities and the heightened complexity of the coursework was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university studies was pronounced, and the transition from the first to the second term felt particularly overwhelming. It can be easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing peers who seem to be excelling.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s highly likely others are as well. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out; teamwork and encouragement are essential.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and demonstrate understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing valuable direction.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of available pastoral support until later in the year, I do wish I had done so earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the courageous decisions I made right away, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to cultivate connections with staff, relationships that have proven incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting acquainted with your instructors and tutors is among the wisest steps you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I realize I have learned a great deal. Those anxious feelings I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—were often baseless. Thanks to the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to navigate the stresses of exams and deadlines while also finding time for joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, self-revelation, and bonding. If you’re preparing to embark on your own university journey, keep in mind to take that leap, stay true to yourself, and embrace the support around you. You can do it!
