**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone accustomed to being shy and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt quite daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it was filled not only with obstacles but also with personal growth, new experiences, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is one of the primary worries about starting university, and I was certainly among them. On my first day in student accommodation, just prior to the term starting, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who make me feel welcomed. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally anxious. What I learned is that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not prepared straight away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people as the year unfolds. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is crucial. With such an eclectic community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or to doubt your capabilities when observing others study and appear to have everything under control.

What assisted me was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The most important lesson I learned during my first year was the necessity of seeking assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, reaching out can significantly alter your experience.

### Encouragement from the Materials Science Community

Speaking of faculty, a highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials department. The staff genuinely wish for students to thrive and are sensitive to the difficulties we encounter. They keep communication open year-round and are always willing to address any issues that arise.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took early on, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It enabled me to form connections with staff members, which proved essential. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and doing so can greatly improve your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—there’s no limit to how much help is beneficial.

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year—was frequently unfounded. An abundance of support exists, from faculty to fellow students, to help you tackle any challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own and that it’s feasible to harmonize academic pressures such as exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I prepare to advance in my degree, I feel increasingly confident and eager about what lies ahead. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative adventure, and I’m grateful for all the lessons it has imparted.
