**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on it now, I can identify an academic year that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Challenge of Friendship
One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might share that sentiment. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days preceding the start of term, I spent the entirety of the day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and engage with others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like an extended family.
How did this transformation occur? It commenced with simple actions, such as engaging in light-hearted conversations with fellow newcomers who were just as anxious as I was. The crucial lesson? Take a bold step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and gatherings aimed at fostering connections. Most significantly, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was another considerable obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to question your abilities when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this was a straightforward realization: everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing similar challenges. The best strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Cultivating the skill to ask for help is one of the most essential tools you can acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Support and Community
In terms of support, the personnel in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, always ready to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not having done so sooner. Early in my journey, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to connect with staff members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support frameworks accessible to you—you can never seek too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during the onset of university was often baseless. With the extensive support avenues available, both from staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely isolated. Moreover, I uncovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of pleasure and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize a year filled with growth, resilience, and community. For anyone preparing to embark on their university path, understand that it’s perfectly fine to feel apprehensive. Take those bold steps, embrace the hurdles, and don’t hesitate to request assistance when needed. You’ll emerge more robust on the other side.
