**Thoughts on My Initial Year of Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reticent, immersing myself in this new environment felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve achieved.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be something on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These relationships have turned into my second family at Imperial, and all it took was stepping beyond my comfort boundaries and sparking conversations with others who were feeling similarly. My realization is that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is beneficial. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to discover individuals who have similar interests and values.
### Facing the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others who seem to have everything sorted.
What aided me was the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely others are experiencing the same struggle. The essential lesson I learned during my first year is to seek help whenever needed. Don’t hesitate to reach out to classmates or teaching staff for assistance.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for students to succeed and understand the challenges we encounter. They show empathy and keep communication lines open throughout the year to address any worries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. Taking that initial step led me to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate strong connections with staff, which has proven to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. My major takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive help.
### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With a vast array of support options from both staff and fellow students, I recognized that I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the pressures from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Beginning university may feel like a plunge into the unfamiliar, but it’s also an extraordinary chance for growth, relationships, and self-exploration. If you’re about to start this journey, embrace it—you may very well surprise yourself with the extent of your personal growth.
