**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I commenced a journey that was filled with nervous anticipation, fear, and uncertainty. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, diving into such a pivotal experience was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year marked by growth, challenges, and happiness, I recognize how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to share that I have forged some of the most significant friendships of my life.

These connections didn’t form overnight—they began with small gestures, like initiating casual conversations with others who were equally anxious. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. My biggest takeaway? Take that leap of faith early on. Even if you’re hesitant to jump in, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker opportunities and events to help you connect with your peers. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Transition

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel inundated or question your abilities when you observe others studying confidently while you grapple with several topics.

What aided me in navigating this challenge was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone encounters difficulties, and if you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are as well. The solution is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. This straightforward act of reaching out can have a significant impact, and it stands out as one of the most vital lessons I gathered in my first year.

### The Significance of Support

Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about student success and are compassionate toward the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered various support avenues.

Although I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a courageous decision for me, but it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal meetings, getting to know your lecturers and support staff is among the best actions you can take for your personal development. Make use of the resources and assistance at your disposal—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was frequently unfounded. There’s an abundance of support available, ranging from staff to fellow students, and you are never truly alone in your challenges. This year has shown me how to juggle academic stress such as exams and deadlines alongside experiences of joy and self-exploration.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and keep in mind that assistance is always accessible. You’ll evolve in ways you never dreamed possible, and you just might have the time of your life while doing so.
