**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was not exactly my strongest suit. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is often a major concern for many newcomers. I recall my first day moving into student housing, just days prior to the start of term. I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my course and throughout the university. All it required was to start small—engaging in light conversation with individuals who were feeling the same. What I’ve realized is that taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or at ease initially, fret not! There are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities crafted to assist you in connecting with others.

Above all, I learned that being true to yourself is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Facing the Academic Demands

Adapting to the academic workload and intensity was another notable challenge. The leap from A-levels was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to be plagued with self-doubt when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging.

What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most essential skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open dialogues with us and expressed understanding for our challenges.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking that courageous step at the beginning of the year also propelled me to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial.

There are various methods to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most significant takeaway is to make the most of the support systems accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive array of support options available from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone.

This year has imparted lessons on how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and excitement. Most importantly, it’s illuminated how much personal development can arise from venturing outside my comfort zone.

To anyone gearing up to begin their university adventure: embrace the challenges, lean on the support surrounding you, and don’t hesitate to take that leap. You may astonish yourself with how far you can soar.
